“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.”
- II Corinthians 1: 3
The Apostle Paul begins his letter with heartfelt praise to God, whom he calls the “Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.” Paul knew this truth not merely in words but through experience. He had endured hardships, imprisonments, persecutions, and trials, yet he found in God an unfailing source of strength and encouragement. He even wrote in this same chapter about his severe trials in Asia, where he was burdened beyond measure, so much that he despaired to life itself. But in those moments, he discovered the sustaining comfort of God. In Isaiah 66:13 the Lord says, “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.” The comfort that the Lord gives us is not a passing relief - it is His abiding presence that sustains us in times of sorrow and lifts us when we are burdened.
Dear friends, the comfort we receive from God is not meant for us alone. Paul reminds us that we are comforted so that we may also comfort others in their troubles. When God heals our wounds, strengthens our faith, and steadies our hearts, He equips us to come alongside others who suffer. There are so many suffering in this world - those who are weary, grieving, and crushed by life’s burdens. What a beautiful cycle of grace it is when we, who have been comforted by God, extend that same consolation to others! Let us not keep this comfort to ourselves, but share it generously with those in pain. PRAYER: Loving Father, thank You for being the God of all comfort. When my heart was broken and my strength was gone, You comforted me by Your Word and Spirit. May the consolation I receive from You flow through me to bless others who are weary and in need. Amen.
