Read : Psalms 51: 1-12

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” - Matthew 5:8

According to the Scripture, “heart” refers to what goes on in the core of our being. The heart is more than just a seat of emotions. It is the source from which all thoughts originate. In Matthew 15:19, Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts - murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” The heart is the storehouse of both the good and evil thoughts, and these thoughts are expressed by the words a man speaks. (Luke 6: 45) When a drunkard opens his mouth to talk, we can hear only foul language coming out of it. Likewise, a murderer’s words reveal his criminal mind! Now let us ask the next question. What does our Lord mean when He says, “pure in heart”? “Pure” means “clean” or “clear.” In Ezekiel 36:26, the Lord said, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” How amazing! Selwyn Hughes writes, “Our Lord is not content with tinkering on the surface of our lives. His goal is to purify our hearts.” “Unfortunately purity does not seem to be popular in contemporary Christianity,” he writes. “Most Christians I talk to want to know how they can possess and develop spiritual gifts. Only a few want to know how to experience the blessing of a heart purified by faith.”

Dear friends, let us yearn for purity more than anything else. Our God is a holy God, and there is nothing unholy in Him. Let us be eager to possess His quality. Let us submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit and be purged out of all our impurities and filthiness and desire to have a heart that is whiter than snow.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, from the depth of my heart I cry to You,“Make me clean.” Wash me clean on the inside that I will be whiter than the whitest snow. Holy Spirit! Purge out all impurities and filthiness from me and fill me afresh. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
