“The Word of the Lord came to Jonah ... “Go to the great city of Nineveh ...”
- Jonah 1: 1, 2
The verse says, “The Word of God came to Jonah.” God could have chosen anyone of the many prophets in Israel, but He chose Jonah, He trusted him with the responsibility - and a great responsibility it was! The Lord said to Jonah, “Arise and go to Nineveh.” When Jonah heard the word “Nineveh,” he was shocked because he hated the people of Nineveh as they were cruel and despised enemies of God’s people. No sooner had God given orders to Jonah than Jonah began quickly to disobey. He boarded a ship that headed to Tarshish. Jonah’s sin was the sin of omission. He refused to do what God called him to do. He ran from the responsibilities of God’s call in his life. Twice in verse 3, it says that Jonah tried to flee from the presence of the Lord. He wanted to put as much distance as possible between himself and God. He wanted to get away and be separated from the place of God’s close fellowship and His nearness. When Christians stay away from the house of God, they are trying to hide themselves from the presence of God. Sin does not like the presence of God. It is reflected in our church attendance and in our own devotional life. Sin and disobedience never bring us up. They pull us down.
Dear friends, a lot of us are on boats sailing for Tarshish while God is saying, “Go to Nineveh.” Where are we headed? There are only two roads in the Christian life - one leads to Nineveh, the road of obedience to God and His Word, and the other Tarshish - the way to disobedience. Let us be honest. Let us confess our rebellion to God and return to Him now.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, how foolish was Jonah that he thought if he could just get to Tarshish, he would be so far away from Nineveh and also from Your presence. But he had to be disciplined much in order to be used by You again. Let me not rebel against You in any matter - small or big. Amen.
