“... Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness." - Psalm 29:2

"If we look upon worship only as a means of getting something from God, rather than giving something to God, then we make God our servant instead of our Lord," writes Warren Wiersbe. The word 'worship' is first used in Genesis 18:2, where Abraham bowed down before the three visitors. One of whom was the Lord of heaven. Worship literally means 'to kiss toward.' It means 'to show reverence,' 'to serve,’ 'to minister.’ "Worship is the total adoring response of man to the one Eternal God," writes Evelyn Underhill. Worship is not formal and cold, but it is "personal and passionate." It is our response to the living God, voluntarily offered to Him as He has offered Himself to us. The Pharisees of Jesus' time thought that they were practising exemplary worship. But Jesus said, "These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me." (Matthew 15:8) KJV

In John 4:19-24, Jesus talked about true worship to the Samaritan woman: "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and truth." If we do not submit to the Word of God, then our worship is probably false. If we merely go through the outward expression of worship, then our worship will be hypocritical and empty. Just as a devoted husband and wife, or parent and child experience the joy and fellowship of each other, which none other except them would understand, so the devoted saint of God enjoys and experiences Him through worship in his own personal way, which cannot be explained by words.

Dear friends, let us understand the significance of worship. If we really know the Lord whom we worship, we will never be careless in our worship.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, let me not be a hypocrite in worshipping just with my mouth and lips, but let me forget about myself, concentrate on You and worship You, submitting my whole self to You. Let me surrender myself to Your Word. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
