"... You have not lied just to men but to God" - Acts 5:4

The Hebrew name Sapphira means the jewel. But tragically whenever the name Sapphira is mentioned, we associate it with greed and deceit. Sapphira along with her husband blatantly lied to God, the Holy Spirit. When the couple saw Barnabas bringing all the money that he got by selling his land to the church, and when they saw the way the people praised Barnabas of his sacrifice, they too wanted to get similar recognition and honor. So they sold the plot of land they had owned, but they brought only a certain part to the church. They were not bound by any rule of the church to sell their land and offer the money. Had they brought nothing also there would not have been any blame. Their sin consisted in surrendering only a part as if it had been the whole, and keeping back the other part for themselves. They tried to cheat not only people, but also God by posing to be honest. And the result was awful. They both dropped dead in the presence of God. How good it would have been if Sapphira had warned her husband not to do such dishonest thing. As Eve tempted Adam to sin, as Delilah was instrumental in the death of Samson, and as Jezebel instigated Ahab to do terrible crimes, so Sapphira tempted her husband to sin unto death.

Dear friends, let us be warned. Let us put off all fraud, deceit, lying and false pretensions, and live a life of integrity before God and men.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, if You deal with the Church today as You did with Ananias and Sapphira two thousand years ago when they lied to the Holy Spirit, there would be only more vacant seats. Let me not take Your grace in vain and blatantly sin. Let me not instigate others also. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
