“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered You, Lord, and my prayer rose to You. ...” - Jonah 2: 7

Everyone, God’s people included, go through afflictions of stress and strain.  But when afflictions come, how do we react?  There are two ways we can respond to any affliction - the natural way and the Biblical way.  When afflictions strike, it is easy and very natural to become bitter and complaining.  We become bitter toward ourselves, toward others and ultimately toward God.  Unbelievers react bitterly to affliction because they do not know God.  But when God’s people react in bitterness, it means that they do not love God or trust Him to bring them deliverance and healing.

What is our Response to Afflictions

The Bible shows us a way to deal with afflictions.  It is to pray.  God purposely sends afflictions so that we will seek Him earnestly.  Manasseh was one of the most wicked kings of Israel.  God warned him repeatedly but in vain.  As a punishment, the Lord sent Assyrians to bind him with fetters and take him captive to Babylon.  But in II Chronicles 33: 12-13 we read that in his distress he sought the favor of the Lord His God and humbled himself greatly before God.  And when he prayed, the Lord listened to him and brought him back to Jerusalem.  Jonah is another classical example.  Inside the great fish’s belly, he cried out to the Lord and the Lord heard him and delivered him.  (Jonah 2:7)

Dear Friends, let us not allow our afflictions drive a wedge between us and God, and turn us bitter against the One who loves us.  Instead, let us draw near  Him with broken heart and pour out our anguish to Him in prayer.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I am afflicted, let me not start complaining against You like the unbelievers who do not know You.  Having tasted Your goodness in the past, let me humble myself, know why You have allowed this and cry out to You in prayer to receive Your peace and deliverance.  Amen.
