“O Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer, who shields my head in the day of battle.” - Psalm 140:7

We all know that Haman is the villain of the Book of Esther. Haman was an Agagite which could mean that he was a descendant of Agag, king of the Amalekites. (I Samuel 15:8) Amalekites were abominable to God because they attacked the weary Israelites at Rephidim. So the Lord said to Moses that He would one day completely destroy them and their descendants from the earth. (Exodus 17:8-15) Years later He chose Saul, the king of Israel, to accomplish this task. But, Saul disobeyed God and did not destroy them fully. (I Samuel 15) As a result, the Amalekites continued to exist on the earth and this Haman who lived during Esther’s time was an Amalekite. That was the reason why Mordecai, a zealous Jew refused to bow down before Haman, when King Xerxes exalted him to a higher noble position. This attitude of Mordecai infuriated Haman, and he wanted to take revenge on the entire Jewish community. He influenced the king to issue a decree stating that all the Jews should be destroyed and killed on a single day. When the Jews in Susa heard of this, they wept and wailed. We know what happened ultimately. The Lord used Esther and Mordecai, to save His own people - the Jews. After a series of events, on the same day when Haman had hoped to overpower the Jews, the Jews got upper hand and struck down their enemies, including all the ten sons of Haman!

Dear friends, it is comforting to know that our Lord cares for us as a mother cares for her new born baby. How zealous is He when He sees us, His children abused and mistreated! Surely, He comes to our rescue, protects us and preserves our lives and that of our descendants.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, keep me safe, for in You I take refuge. You are my hiding place and Your name is a strong tower. So, let me run to You in times of danger. Give me the confidence that You will never let my enemy overpower me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
