“Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau. ...”
- Genesis 32: 11

Jacob’s prayer mentioned in today’s text is one of the greatest prayers recorded in the Bible, and yet it was prayed by a man whose faith was very weak. He forgot that when God commanded to do something, He would also enable him to do it. He feared that his brother Esau would kill him when he would meet him. As Jacob reviewed the past twenty years in his prayer, he reminded God of the wonderful way He had cared for him. When he arrived at Padan Aram all he owned was his pilgrim’s staff, and now by the blessing of the Lord he became very wealthy. Would God who had cared for him for twenty years allow him to be murdered by his brother?
Next in his prayer, Jacob said to God that he was afraid of Esau who would attack him and all his family members. He did not understand that God had a great plan for his descendants, that his sons would multiply and become a great nation of Israel and through Israel God would bless all human kind, and that the Savior would come from the tribe of Judah and die for the sins of the world. Would this eternal plan of God fail because of the anger of one man Esau? Thirdly in his prayer, Jacob reminded the Lord of the promises He had made to him at Bethel. (Genesis 28:12-15) God told Jacob that He would be with him and bring him back to Bethel. Jacob was so blind with fear that he could not reason out that if God allowed Esau and his men to kill him and his family, none of these promises would be fulfilled.
Dear friends, let us not see the negative side of Jacob’s prayer – a prayer of unbelief. But let us imitate his prayer for good. He claimed God’s promises, remembered God’s goodness and rested on God’s character and His covenant.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, let my prayer be full of faith and confidence and trust in You. No matter what circumstances I face or what fears may grip my heart, let me take hold of Your promises, remember Your goodness and rest on Your covenant. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
