“Go down to the potter’s house and there I will give you my message.”

- Jeremiah 18: 1

The Lord told Jeremiah to go to the potter’s house.   He wanted Jeremiah to learn a lesson there, from daily life. At the potter’s house Jeremiah saw the potter working at his rotating wheel to shape a pot from the clay that swirled through his hands.  Then something went wrong.  The clay became marred (Jeremiah 18:4) likely because of some impurity in the clay.  Watching the potter at work, Jeremiah noticed that the lump of clay was uncopperative.  But, Jeremiah saw that the potter did not throw the clay away, instead, he started forming another pot.  This is a picture of how our Lord works.  The Lord is like the potter and we are like the clay in His hands.  He is continuously shaping us.  He may have an intention for us, but depending upon how we respond or how we yield to His moulding,  He may rework us into something else.

This parable teaches us three things.  Its first purpose is to show that God is sovereign.  He has sovereignty over individuals, peoples and nations. (Isaiah 45:9)  Its second purpose is to show that God cannot tolerate sin or impurity in His people.  Third, it teaches us that if we repent of our sin  He will remake us; but if we do not repent, He would abandon us.  The illustration of the potter not only demonstrate God’s right to display judgment but also His right to display mercy.

Dear friends, let us be careful not to rebel against God.  Let us yield to Him, allow Him to mold us and shape us as an useful vessel He wants to make of us.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for Your mercy.  When I sin, You do not cast me away completely, but put me afresh upon the wheel and make me again.  I yield myself afresh to You.  I confess that I have marred Your work.  With humility I ask that You make me again into a useful vessel.  Amen.
