Read : Exodus 16: 1-3
“Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. ... And do not grumble. ...”
- I Corinthians 10: 6, 10
The Israelites set out from Elim and came to the Desert Sin. And there in the desert the whole Israel community grumbled. May be they had enjoyed so much of comfortable times in Elim - with twelve springs and seventy palm trees, that they were not willing to camp in the hot desert. They soon forgot God’s miracles they had received in the past - His protection by pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night, His miracle at Marah. They did not trust God. They could have humbly presented their matter to Moses and Aaron. But they chose the worst reaction possible.

They lamented, “If only we had dead by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat round pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted.” (Exodus 16:3) It was a blatant remark against God Himself.
Dear friends, in our spiritual journey, God may allow some testing situations to us to see our reactions. Let us be careful of what we say. The words that slip out of our mouth may well become our destiny. Indeed, the Israelites were killed by the hand of the Lord Himself in the desert. What we need to know is that God hears our every word and even He knows our every thought. In verses 11-12, the Lord told Moses, “I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel.” Let us be warned. We need to give an account of each and every careless word that we speak against men. (Mathew 12:36) And how much more if the careless words are against the Lord and His mercy! Let us be careful not to grumble over the situation that the Lord brings our way. An attitude of gratitude is always an antidote for the spirit of grumbling.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I go through difficult paths in my spiritual journey, let me not grumble against You. Let me trust that You, who have done miracles in the past, are able to deliver me, protect me and provide me even in this difficult phase. Let me have an attitude of gratitude. Amen.
