Read : Philippians 2: 5-11
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand. ..."
- 1 Peter 5:6
Manasseh was the wicked King of Judah. He did all detestable things before the Lord, which included sacrificing children in the fire, practicing sorcery, divination, witchcraft, etc. This provoked the Lord's anger, and so He allowed him to be taken as a captive by the Assyrians, who in turn put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon. But, in his distress, Manasseh "humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers." (II Chronicles 33:12) And the Lord, in His great mercy, not only forgave Manasseh, but reinstated him as the King of Judah. What an incredible example of how God will forgive even if we go to enormous extent of sinning! But, for doing that He wants us to humble ourselves.
How do we humble ourselves before the Lord? Just look up into the night sky. The Lord, who set suns and stars in motion, He who determines the number of stars and calls them each by name (Psalm 147:4), He who created the earth and all its inhabitants by His Word, He who formed man from the dust in His own image - the same Lord humbled Himself, took the form of a slave and hung on the Cross to bear our sins.
Dear friends, if God so humbled Himself, how dare we who call ourselves as His children walk around with overstuffed ego, pride and resentments? Let us realise our unworthiness and walk in all humility and meekness before God and men.PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to realise how unworthy I am before Your greatness. Help me to look at the Cross in which Your only Son hung, despised and rejected. Give me His spirit of humility. Take away all pride from my heart. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
