“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures

forever.” - Psalm 107: 1

Psalm 107 is a psalm of praise to God who changes things. This Psalm is all about the Jewish exiles returning from Babylon back to Jerusalem. They had been redeemed and rescued, and were filled with joy. God had changed things for them, and they were full of thanksgiving. In 1871, when the great fire broke out in Chicago during D.L. Moody’s time, another fire broke out on the same night in a small town in Wisconsin. The fire erupted so suddenly, it sounded like an explosion that woke up the entire town, and within a single hour, it incinerated everything. Residents fled to the nearby Peshtigo River, which was a chilling 60 degrees. The air was so filled with smoke - breathing was difficult and a terrible burning sensation filled the eyes. Eight hundred people died in the fire, making it the deadliest fire in American history. When the fires had passed, the ashes cooled and the people could go back and look at what was left, they found that almost nothing survived except a Bible, which was found near the drugstore. It had been petrified by the flames, and it was open to Psalm 107. lt was a message to them that even in hard to comprehend times, God can be trusted to redeem us, to help us and to save us from distress.

Dear friends, the Lord has the power to change things. He can change our lives, our attitudes, and our circumstances. He has done great things on our behalf and He will do so again and again. Even when something in our life turns to ashes, even when all our hope is gone, in the middle of it all, we can say, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. Let the redeemed of the Lord say this!”
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am so glad because You are the Lord who changes my life, my attitude and my circumstances. I believe that You can turn my sorrow into joy and my ashes into glory, and redeem me from my losses. Let me have this hope, and praise You for Your mercy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
