Read : I Peter 4: 1-4
“Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves also
with the same attitude. ...” - I Peter 4: 1
When a Christian is undergoing suffering of any kind, he needs to arm himself with the armor of God. He must do this to defeat the enemies of his soul - the world, the flesh and the devil. The armor of a Roman soldier had a shield which provided him defense and a sword which provided offensive thrust. When our Lord was being tempted by the devil, He quoted from Deuteronomy 8:3, and said to Satan, “Man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Christ used the Word as a sword to drive away the enemy.
Peter says here that we are to have the mind of Christ, that is, we have to view suffering as Christ viewed it. It is our attitude on suffering which will determine how we are going to come out in the end. If we have the right attitude, we will learn the lessons which God wants to teach us and come out of it victoriously. How did Christ look at suffering? He looked at it through the eyes of God. He had a divine viewpoint, not a human one. How then do we get the mind of Christ in suffering? By knowing and applying God’s Word in our lives by faith, and so when suffering comes we will be prepared for it and become triumphant. To do this, we must know, memorise and meditate on the promises and principles of the Word of God.
Dear friends, when we are not saturated with God’s Word and operating on faith, we would not have protection and would be laid open to the subtle attacks of the world, the flesh and the devil.PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to adopt the same frame of mind as Jesus had, so that I will protect myself against the attacks of the devil. Let me put on the shield of faith and carry the Sword of Spirit, Your Word, be prepared to face the suffering and come out of it triumphantly. Amen.
