Read : Acts 2 : 1-17
“... He (Jesus) has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.” - Acts 2 : 33
“Revival is an extraordinary work of God, producing extraordinary results among a large group of people,” writes Selwyn Hughes.
Martin Lloyd Jones writes, “All revivals are in some way a return to Pentecost. Every revival in history repeats some aspect of that first great outpouring.’’ If we read Acts Chapter 2 carefully, we would be amazed to find how God came down upon the 120 men, in a majestic, awesome, startling and extraordinary way. A sound like the blowing of a violent wind was heard and what seemed to be tongues of fire came to rest on the believers who had gathered there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues. This supernatural event attracted the attention of the Jews who had gathered in Jerusalem. They were amazed and perplexed to hear the disciples declaring the wonderful work of the Lord in their own language. Then Peter took charge of the situation. Full of Holy Spirit, he got up and his one sermon resulted in three thousand souls coming to the Kingdom of God! Halleluiah! Wasn’t this a great revival!
Richard Owen Roberts talks about “heart to heart preaching,” where “something happens in the preacher’s heart of so compelling a nature that it runs like quicksilver into the heart of the hearer, producing great and wonderful results.” Doubtless, Peter’s message on the day of Pentecost was of this kind. Acts 2:37 says that as soon as the people heard Peter’s words, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter “What shall we do?” Immediately Peter led them to repentance, and baptism.
Dear friends, don’t we find too wide a gap between the church of the apostles’ day and the Church of today? Let us bend our knees in prayer that God should raise up Spirit-filled preachers who would deliver heart to heart sermons. PRAYER: Gracious Lord, how could Peter who acted like a coward and denied You at the high priest’s courtyard the day before Your crucifixion, deliver such powerful message on the day of Pentecost? Was it not because he was filled by the Holy Spirit? Lord, I pray that You fill everyone in our churches today! Amen.
