“He read ... all the words of the Book of the Covenant, ... The king ... renewed the covenant ... to follow the Lord.” - II Chronicles 34: 30,31
When Josiah became king, the whole land of Judah was plunged in idol worship. But Josiah served the Lord wholeheartedly. He destroyed the idols and smashed the Asherah poles. He then appointed men to repair the temple of God at Jerusalem. While they were repairing, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord that had been given through Moses. How painful it is to know that all these years the Book of Law was misplaced inside the temple itself! Josiah was so deeply moved when he heard the Law that he tore his robes and ordered the high priest to inquire of the Lord concerning the spiritual condition of his country. When he knew from the prophetess Huldah that the Lord was going to bring a disaster to them because of their sinful ways, Josiah immediately called all his people to the temple of the Lord and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord. He then removed all the detestable idols from all the territory of Israel, and burnt them thus destroying them totally. He then celebrated Passover and such a Passover had not been observed in Israel since the days of Prophet Samuel. (II Chronicles 35:18)
Dear friends, the Word of God is living and active. It is sharper than any double edged sword. It cuts through our soul and leads us to repentance. Repentance is the first step towards revival. So let us not neglect reading the Word of God and doing what it says. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I am ashamed to confess that I have neglected Your Word for quite some time because of my busy schedule. Thank You for reminding me of its importance in my life. Let me not backslide in my spiritual life and be deteriorated, but let me be renewed day by day. Amen.
