“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial because, ... he will receive the crown of life. ...” - James 1: 12

Often life appears to be very unfair for believers.  They sincerely try to honor God and make every choice to follow the Truth.  They pursue to do what is right even when it would cost less to do wrong. Yet such believers suffer and experience more hardships than unbelievers.  Many of us think that if we do right in the sight of God, then we will be protected from evil.  But the experiences of the saints of God tell us it does not always work that way.  Let us take Jeremiah, the Old Testament prophet.  He took God’s side against worldly kings, false prophets and priests.    Doing so brought only rejection for himself.  In Jeremiah 18:18 the people of Judah said, “Come let us make plans against Jeremiah.  ... Let us attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.”  Jeremiah 20:2 says that the chief officer in the temple had Jeremiah beaten and put in the prison.  Jeremiah 38:5 says that Jeremiah was put into the cistern that had no water, but only mud, and that he sank down into the mud. Sometimes his suffering was so severe, he even felt rejected by God.

Dear friends, we wonder, as to  how we should live when so much of our troubles come because we are trying to honor God?  Let us remind ourselves of what our Lord said in Matthew 5: 11-12, “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil  against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because   great is your reward in heaven.”  We are blessed because at such times we shift our eyes away from this world and towards heaven.  This focus puts a proper perspective in our lives.

PRAYER:  Dear Lord,  I sometimes wonder why I face so many  hardships even though I follow Your commands faithfully.  I realize that I am blessed because it makes me turn my focus toward You.  The recompense for my faithfulness may never come in this lifetime, but I will receive an everlasting reward on the other shore.  Amen.
