“Like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that

spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions.”

- Deuteronomy 32: 11

Alexander writes, “Two parent eagles on Ben Weevis were teaching their offspring, two young birds, the manoeuvres of flight. Rising from the top of the mountain, they at first made small circles and the young imitated them. Then the parent eagles paused their wings waiting till they made their first flight, holding them on their expanded wings when they appeared exhausted. They then took a second and larger circle, always rising toward the sun and then enlarging their circle of flight, so as to make a gradual ascending spiral.” Like the eagle which teaches its young to fly and in doing so protects them from injury with watchful affection, in Deuteronomy 32: 11, Moses describes the care with which the Lord came to the relief of His people in their helplessness, and assisted them to develop strength. He wanted them to remember that although they experienced hardship and strife in the wilderness, He did not abandon them. He provided for all their needs in several ways. He fed them with manna for the entire 40 years. He gave water abundantly for them and their flocks as well, and delivered them from their enemies.

Dear friends, we too face challenges of many kinds in this world, but we can take comfort and courage in this reminder that God will never leave us. When we fear that we are falling, the Lord, like an eagle, will spread His wings to catch us. God will fly to our rescue and spread His everlasting arms beneath us. Let us remember, God’s love does not always keep us from trials, but always sees us through the trials.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me not be afraid of the challenges and trials I face everyday. Let me have the confidence that You, like a mother eagle hovers over its young ones and spreads its wings to catch them when they fall, will spread Your everlasting arms beneath me and protect me from all harm. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
