The eighteenth century was a time of great moral and spiritual darkness and political restlessness in England. The authority of Bible was shaken. Church buildings became dilapidated. Every third house in London sold liquor. Londoners rarely travelled after dark due to the fear of robbers and smugglers. In the early 1730s, John Wesley, Charles Wesley and George Whitefield gathered several students at Lincoln College, Oxford University to earnestly seek the Lord. Without minding the opposition, the three continued their ministry. About his ordination, George Whitefield wrote as follows: “When the Bishop laid his hand on me my heart melted. I offered my whole spirit, soul and body to God’s service.” From that day on Whitefield preached with great power and unction. He was only twenty-two years old, but whenever he spoke, crowds flocked to hear him and thousands were saved. John Wesley was a constant traveler. One year he walked 1050 miles to preach in the Churches around Oxford. His speech was calm, but full of power, certainty and authority which brought a stronger sense of God’s nearness and holiness. Charles Wesley was the most emotional and appealing of the three. Tears would flow down his cheeks as he spoke and his audience was deeply moved.

Dear friends, the revival fire that burned through them rekindled two nations, England and America, and spread worldwide – leading thousands to Christ.  In these dark and gloomy days, the Lord needs such committed men and women to ignite the renewal fire in our own country.  Shall we rise up for His glory?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, at this hour of moral and spiritual darkness that prevails in my country, help me to stand in the gap on behalf of my countrymen and plead for grace and mercy. Raise up more Wesleys and Whitefields to work for You with zeal and commitment. Use me also according to Your plan. Amen.
