Friday, May 02 || DO WE HAVE A COVENANTAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?

Read : Deuteronomy 5: 1-4

“It was not with our fathers that the Lord made this covenant, but with us. ...” - Deuteronomy 5: 3

Covenant means treaty, or agreement between two parties. God made a covenant with Israel. It was a covenant between the infinite holy God and finite unholy man! Isn’t it amazing! In today’s verse, Moses talked to the Israelites about God’s covenant with them. Here, “our fathers” refers to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob with whom God made the “unconditional” Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 12: 1-3), all of whom died without receiving the promise - the entering of the Promised Land. While the Abrahamic covenant unconditionally guaranteed the Promised Land to the Israelites, the Mosaic covenant was given so they would enter the Promised Land and also enjoy it. But their enjoyment was “conditional” - it was based on their obedience to the statutes and ordinances of God.

Dear friends, when we are saved, we are granted eternal life in Christ. That is our possession forever. However, like the Israelites in the Promised Land, the enjoyment of our life in Christ is dependent on our obedience. Jesus said in John 10:10 that He came so that we may have life and we may have it more abundantly. If we are not living a life in Christ that is extraordinary, then perhaps we have to do some inventory to see if there is some disobedience in some area of our life. If so, let us confess and repent and get ready to experience an extraordinary life in Christ, nourished by daily intake of His Word and by continual filling of His Spirit.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, You made  the covenant with Israel in the Old Testament.  Now, You have made a new covenant with me.  You have given me a new relationship established through the sacrifice of Jesus.  Let me enjoy the abundant life in Christ to the fullest.  Help me to weed off any sin that prevents me from enjoying this supernatural life.  Amen.
