Sunday, June 07 Read: Revelation 3: 1-6

“... I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are

dead.” - Revelation 3: 1

The Church of Sardis had a good reputation among the neighbouring churches. No false doctrine was taking root in its fellowship. Its congregation was probably quite large for those days and growing. It had no shortage of money, talent or human resources. There was every indication of life and vigor. But “outward appearances are deceptive, and this socially distinguished congregation was a spiritual graveyard,” writes John Stott. “It seemed to be alive, but it was actually dead.” Christ saw beneath the surface, and He said to the Sardis Church, “I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.” (Revelation 3:2) There were duties done in the church, but they were just a routine. Incenses, sacrifices and music were offered to God with utmost devotion. But their hearts were far from God. The reputation that Sardis had earned was with men, but not with God. They seemed worthy enough to onlookers, but in God’s sight they were thoroughly defective. Its members belonged to Church in name, but not in heart.

Dear friends, this distinction between what men see and what God sees is of great importance to every age and place. 
I Samuel 16:7 says, “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Let us remember that it is before God that we would stand, and to Him that one day we must give an account. So let us examine ourselves and live to earn an applause from God, not just men.

Dear Lord, You read my thoughts and know my motives. You can see if I am sincere in the profession of my faith or not. Let me not rate human opinion too highly, becoming depressed when criticized and elated when flattered. Let me live to please You, and to honor You with my mouth and my life as well. Amen.
