Read : Psalm 78: 51-62
“... By the strength of Your arm, preserve those condemned to die.”
- Psalm 79:11
When Solomon became old, he turned his heart away from the Lord and followed Ashtoreth and Molech, the detestable gods. After Solomon, Jeroboam made two golden calves and said to the people, “Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of Egypt,” and influenced the people to worship them. (I Kings 12:28- 33) The kings who reigned after Jeroboam also deliberately did more and more wicked things before the Lord. The Lord repeatedly warned the people by sending His prophets, but Israel and Judah became more and more rebellious and continued to worship Baal. So finally the Lord handed them over to their enemies, the Babylonians and the Assyrians. During the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, the Babylonians marched against Jerusalem, killed the sons of Zedekiah before his very eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon. They set fire to the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem and carried all the people who remained in the city along with them to Babylon as exiles. The people of Israel and Judah were thus judged by the Lord. But inspite of all their wickedness, the Lord did not abandon them once for all. He prophesied through Jeremiah, “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place. (Jeremiah 29:10)
Dear friends, accordingly the Lord preserved the Jews for seventy years amidst various difficult periods and finally brought them to their own land Israel. What a faithful Lord He is! Let us not take His mercy for granted, but revere Him and obey His commands wholeheartedly. PRAYER: Loving Lord, how faithfully You preserved the lives of the Jews when they were in exile for seventy years and brought them once again to their own land. Let me not take Your mercy for granted, but correct myself when You rebuke me, and reconcile with You immediately. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
