“However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” - I Peter 4:16
It is painful to see many Christians these days who want to receive only the blessings from the Lord, but are not willing to participate in His sufferings.
In Philippians 1:29 Paul says, “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for Him.” “If we endure, we will also reign with Him.” (II Timothy 2:12)
James, the brother of the Lord, was considered a just and perfect man. Because he always knelt down and prayed, his knees lost their sense of feeling and became hardened like the knees of the camel. The Pharisees feared that soon all people would decide to follow Jesus by hearing his sermons. They told James, “We beg you to restrain people from following Jesus. Persuade those who come to the Passover that Jesus is not the Messiah.” So, on the Passover Day, they made him go to the top of the temple and then they cried, “O, Just man, these people are going astray after Jesus. Talk with them!” And James answered, “Why do you ask me of Jesus, the Son of God? He sits on the right hand of the Most High and shall come in the clouds of heaven.” The Pharisees became furious, went up and threw James off the temple. But James was not killed by the fall. He turned, fell on his knees and called, “O Lord God, Father, I beg you to forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” Just then a fuller took the instrument he used to beat clothes, hit James on the head and killed him. James died as a martyr for Jesus while he was praying. (Source: The Fox’s Book of Martyrs)
Dear friends, how is our commitment to the Lord? Is it shallow and superficial, unwilling to even stand the slightest tribulation for Jesus? Or is it strong enough to stand and testify that He is the Lord, even if our life is endangered?PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am ashamed to confess that when unfavourable situation comes, I tend to disown You, and act as if I am not a Christian. Please forgive me. Give me the zeal. Empower me with Your Spirit so that I will stand boldly and testify Jesus, even if I am ridiculed for my faith. Amen.
