William Carey, often called the father of modern missions, was a shoe maker by trade before he came to India. He kept a map of India in his shop, stopping every so often to study and pray over it. Sometimes, because of preaching ministry, his shoe business was affected. One day, a friend admonished him for neglecting his business. “Neglecting my business?” said Carey, looking at him intently. “My business is to extend the Kingdom of God. I only cobble shoes to pay expenses.”

Dear friends, no matter what our occupation, every Christian should have Carey’s mentality, “My real business is to extend the Kingdom; I just work to pay expenses.” In other words, every Christian is in the ministry. Ephesians 4:  11-12 states that God gave to the Church apostles, prophets,  evangelists, pastors and teachers for equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, to the building up of the body of Christ. If you are a believer, then you are in the ministry! Some may work full time in the ministry. But every Christian, like William Carey, should see their main business as serving the Lord. Some of you might say, “I am not at all gifted any way.” But remember, in the parable of talents, it was the man with only one talent who buried it was rebuked by his master, because he did not use it to further the master’s interests. So if you know Christ as your Savior, you are called to serve Him in some capacity. And remember, our walk with Christ is the necessary basis for our work for Christ. So, let your work for the Lord always be the overflow of your walk with Him.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for reminding me today that my main business is to serve You, wherever I am and whatever earthly job I do. Let my ministry be backed by my life of integrity. Help me to continually depend on Your Spirit and do Your ministry with wholehearted devotion.. Amen.
