"Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me." - Mark 10: 47
Mercy always involves help to those who are in need or distress. When the blind Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was passing by, he shouted, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" It was a reverent and urgent appeal which expressed his deep need and his faith. We can paraphrase it something like, "Please Lord - do this!" Jesus was on His way to the Cross. This would be the last time He would be passing by this beggar's location in Jericho. Maybe Bartimaeus sensed this great urgency and realized that he must seek Jesus now or never. We read this thought expressed in Isaiah 55:6, "Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near." Remember - Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, was not pleading from merit, but because of his desperate need.
Dear friends, it is not just Bartimaeus who needed to cry, "Have mercy on me, Lord," but it is us, for we daily commit sins of thought, word and deed, some we are not aware of, some that are done wilfully. So we too, like this blind beggar, should frequently find ourselves crying out to Jesus, our great High Priest, who intercedes for us in heaven. As Jesus passes by our side, let us cry out for His mercy and beg Him for our physical as well as spiritual needs. As someone said, "Never plead merit when asking God for things, always plead mercy."
Prayer: Dear Lord, Bartimaeus was in the dark. He believed that he would receive the light in his eyes if he cried to You for mercy. He did not want to miss the opportunity and appealed to You desperately, and he was healed. Have mercy on me as I come to You for mercy. Let Your light shine in me. Amen.
