"Then Israel sang this song, "Spring up, O Well! Sing about it." Numbers 21: 17
When the Israelites were continuing their journey in the desert, they were thirsty. The Lord said to Moses, "Gather the people together and I will give them water." (Numbers 21:16) So the Israelites gathered together and sang this song. And this song is unique!
First, it revealed the people's cheerfulness. There was no water, but they had good spirits. Supplies were short, but their courage was great.
Second, they sang with expectation, believing in the Lord's promise - "I will give them water." They were singing before the water came, praising the Lord while they were yet thirsty, believing that He who split the rock and made the waters gush out, and He who gave them bread from heaven would surely supply their needs.
Third, this song was also a united prayer of faith. All of them sang and prayed, "Spring up, O well!" We can even say that it was a "prayer meeting" in which everyone prayed, for they were all thirsty.
C.H. Spurgeon writes, "They began with a promise, they turned the promise into a song and into a prayer." And they did not stop there, but then they began to work. The princes dug and the nobles dug. And with what did they dig? With their sceptres and staffs! (verse 18) These were simply their rods, somewhat similar to the shepherd's crook. As they dug, they touched the stream that was running beneath, and out sprang springs of water, which quenched the thirst of the multitudes. Dear friends, let us trust God's promises and go forth in faith, doing what our Master commands. Surely we will see springs of water welling up in the wilderness of life.
Prayer: Dear Lord, when I face trials, let me not murmur against You, but trust Your promises and go forth in faith singing, praying and praising You for Your faithfulness. You who have delivered me in the past will never, ever forsake me. I will surely see Your goodness yet again. Amen.
