“Pray continually.” - I Thessalonians 5:17
“Prevailing prayer is the prayer that pushes right through all difficulties and obstacles, drives away all the opposing forces of Satan and secures the will of God,” writes Wesley Duewel. Why should we prevail in prayer?
Firstly, to oppose Satan in his battle for souls. When we pray for an unsaved person to yield to Christ, we are praying in harmony with God’s will. But we are praying in direct opposition to Satan and against the action of all his evil spirits. To begin with, the souls for whom we are praying will show great resistance, and to overcome this, persistent prayer is needed to obtain victory.
Secondly, to overcome the attack of Satan on Christians. Even strong believers are subject to demonic attack. Satan persuaded King David once to take a wrong action. (I Chronicles 21:1) In Matthew 16: 22-23, he talked through Peter and tried to distract Jesus from accepting the Cross. If Satan could try to attack even the mind of Christ, when He fasted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), then how prone we are to his attacks however strong in faith we may be! So, we should certainly prevail in prayer.
Thirdly, to protect ourselves from the direct attack of Satan. The devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (I Peter 5:8) He becomes wild when we decide to stand for Christ, and so he tries to attack us physically, mentally or emotionally.
Dear friends, we experience only a few great spiritual victories because we do not prevail in prayer. We are powerless and fruitless because we pray very casually. Daniel’s request was granted, but the answers for his prayer were delayed for twenty-one days by the demonic powers. Only because of his prevailing prayer, he attained the spiritual victory. Let us also persist and prevail in prayer. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, many times I stop praying mid-way. Give me a spirit of prayer and supplication. Help me to prevail in prayer. Help me to guard my soul and the souls of other Christians through my prayer. Help me to taste and see that prayer brings victory. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
