“He (the Lord) catches the wise in their craftiness. ...” - Job 5:13
“... A fool is hotheaded and reckless.” - Proverbs 14:16
“The spiritual condition of our hearts is revealed not only by the actions we perform but also by the words we speak,” writes Warren Wiersbe. “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34) This was true in the life of King Saul. Before the Israelites went to fight with the Philistines, Saul foolishly forced his army to agree to a vow of fasting. He said, “Cursed be any man who eats food before evening.” He thought that their fasting would impress God and give them victory. No sensible commander would deprive his troops of food before venturing for the battle. But Saul acted without sense. His foolish oath weakened his soldiers and hindered their ability to pursue the enemy. But the Lord honored Saul’s son, Jonathan’s faith and courage, and gave a great victory to the Israelites. If the Lord had not fought the battle and if He had allowed Saul to act in his folly, certainly the Israelites would have been wiped out by the Philistines. So after defeating their enemies, with no food all through the day, the soldiers were exhausted and famished. By the time the sun had set and ushered in a new day, the soldiers knew that the vow made by Saul was no longer in force and they acted like animals by pouncing on the plunder. They butchered the animals on the ground and ate them with the blood. In doing so, they sinned against God’s commandment which prohibited His people to eat meat with the blood. (Leviticus 3:17)
Dear friends, let us fear God and follow His counsel. Let us not make reckless and foolish statements and regret later for our careless words. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, before taking an important decision let me wait upon You and do as You say. Let me not in my arrogance talk foolishly and act recklessly and end up in failure. Let my heart be right with You and let me be willing to obey Your Word. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
