In Congo, news came that the guerillas were coming to attack a school. Most of the children were sent home except for a few orphans who had no homes. Nine year old Paul was the fourth grade monitor. Small for his age, he had difficulty in running fast. By the time all the other students had left, the truck had arrived and the guerillas piled out of it and seeing Paul, they shouted at him, “Where are your classmates?” Almost paralyzed with fear, Paul prayed to God to give him courage to go through the ordeal. “I will never betray my friends,” Paul decided. The men grabbed him, flung him down, beat him and kicked him. Suddenly Paul pretended to be like Jackie, a boy in his class, who was a deaf-mute who could communicate by garbled sounds. “Tell us where they are hiding,” the men cried in fury. Paul told later, “I kept repeating that Jesus loved me so much that He died for me and so I could go through anything they did to me for His sake.” Suddenly one soldier said, “We’re wasting time. This boy is a deaf-mute. He can’t help us.” Climbing the truck, they drove off. Paul had come to know Lord Jesus as his Savior only a short time before. And when the test had come, faced by the cruelty of the rebel soldiers, Paul refused to withdraw. The Lord honored the little boy’s faith and courage. He stood by his side and saved him from his brutal enemies.

Dear friends, would our zeal and commitment to the Lord be strong as Paul’s in the hour of trial and persecution?  If we love the Lord truly, we too can demonstrate it like Paul did.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, when I am threatened for my faith in You, or when I am forced to give up my faith in You, let me not deny You on any account. Give me your grace to stand firm in the hour of test and honor You by my zeal and commitment. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
