“... we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

- I Timothy 6:7

Money has a sinister nature. It gives the one who holds it a sense of superiority and also makes him lust after more of it - even if he is having more than enough. It seduces the owner to earn more and save more. However, when we read John Wesley's suggested formula on money, earning and saving do not seem to be evil in themselves, but only thing is we should use the money to help those who are in need. MAKE - SAVE - GIVE!  John Wesley echoed Jesus' thoughts on money. That is why he said: "Make all you can, save all you can, give all you can.” Jesus never condemned earning - not even saving - but only 'storing,' in stronger terms 'hoarding.' We look for permanence while investing in material goods, though in vain.  Jesus said that things stored here are not long-lasting. We read in today's text that Jesus advised the multitude to 'store' up things up there and not down here where everything is temporary!  "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." Matthew 6:19-20 (NIV)

Dear friends, what is our outlook today? Are we interested in storing the treasure in heaven or just hoard it here and leave it here itself when we leave this earth? Let us check our motives. Let us ask God to give us grace to make as much as we can, save as much as we can and send portions to others as much as we can. Remember, we can’t take anything out of here!

PRAYER:  Almighty God, let me realise that when You give me strength and wisdom to earn earthly riches, You want me to use them for the benefit of those who are less privileged and who need to be helped. Help me not hoard riches but help as many deserving people here. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
