“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” - Matthew 6:34
Fulton Oursler rightly said, "We crucify ourselves between two thieves: regret for yesterday and fear of tomorrow." The Lord wants us to live our everyday lives free from the arrows that the enemy aims at us from three different directions - the past, present and the future.
First, the fear of the future. The devil uses this weapon very effectively, especially when we are at the confusing crossroads of life. May be you are about to join a new job, or you are getting married, or you are facing retirement. The fear of the future in such situations can paralyze us and drain out all our courage to live the present day. We need to watch out for this deadly arrow so that it doesn't hit us unawares. When we see such negative thoughts about the future approaching our mind, we should ask the Holy Spirit to divert our thoughts to focus on His throne instead. We should start thanking Him for His all-sufficiency for every aspect of our future. This can be really tough at times, as tough as swimming against a strong tide. But if we realise the dreadful consequences of entertaining such negative thoughts, we will definitely try to refrain from doing so. First, we infect other people around us with our pessimism, our complaints and our panic attacks. This is in direct contrast to how the Lord wants us to live our lives in front of people of other faiths. Second and most important, with or without our own knowledge, we deny Christ when we worry about our future. We deny that there is a God above who is so much more powerful than our future. We defy the supremacy of God and question His ability to solve our pea-sized problems.
Dear friends, let us ask God today to help us rise above all our natural human worries and anxieties about the future. When we do so, He will surely pump into us the strength, energy and courage we need to face the future without fear or dread.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I have wasted many “todays” by worrying too much about my future. Help me commit my journey ahead to You instead, because my times are in Your Hands and every day of my future belongs to You. Help me overcome all my unnecessary fears and live at peace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
