“I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.” - Psalm 38: 18
Martin Luther said, “The whole Christian life is a life of repentance.” These words may seem strange to modern ears. Repentance is not a concept we like to think about. It implies guilt, which we would rather not admit, and it speaks of changing our ways and reforming our habits, which is not easy to do. And perhaps some of us have been taught that repentance happens only once - the moment a person becomes a Christian. But repentance should be an everyday act. Both the Bible and our common sense teach us that as long as we live in this fallen world, we will struggle with sin of one degree or another. It is true that our basic sinful nature remains a part of us even after we are born again. But this fact should not discourage us in the least. In Psalm 38, we read that David was overwhelmed by his sins. He asked God not to rebuke him in anger. He recognized his own fault, and his complete dependence on God for help. This should be our attitude. We must take an honest look at our own life, and when we see sin, we must not ignore it, but be willing to confess it to God. If we confess our sin, God is willing to forgive it. He will remove it.
C.H.Spurgeon writes, “To be sorry for sin is no atonement for it, but it is the right spirit in which to turn to Jesus, who is the Savior.” So dear friends, let us pause and examine ourselves each day, and ask God to open our eyes to sin in our life. And as He does, let us be quick to confess it. Apart from a living relationship with Jesus, we have no power within us to defeat sin and live in righteousness.PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, I praise You for the Cross and the resurrection from the dead that makes forgiveness of all my sins possible. You have promised that You will remember my sins no more, and that You will remove them as far as the East is from the West. As I confess my sins, have mercy on me and pardon me Amen.
