“... the way of Balaam ... who loved the wages of wickedness. But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing ...” - II Peter 2: 15,16

Here, we read the story of Balaam, the prophet and Balak, the king of Moab.  As the Israelites traveled to Canaan, the Moabites were aware of all the miracles that had accompanied Israel’s exodus from Egypt and they grew afraid.  So when the Israelites encamped in the territory of Moab, Balak sent some men with a large fee for divination to summon Balaam, asking him to put a curse on God’s people.  But God did not allow Balaam to go along with those men.  When Balak sent his men again, the second time, Balaam began to yield.  He should have told them to leave immediately, instead he said, “Stay here tonight and  I will find out what else the Lord will tell me.”  Balaam knew God’s will.  He simply did not want to obey.  God had already told him not to go, but Balaam hoped that the Lord will change His mind and will open a way for him.  Deep in his heart Balaam wanted to go with the  messengers because he was greedy of gain.

Dear friends, you and I are often in Balaam’s situation.  We know of what God wants.  But we desire something else so badly that we keep going back to the Lord, asking Him to change His mind.  Let us be warned.  If we know God is speaking to us personally, our immediate response should be to obey without hesitating or questioning.  When we begin to say, “But God ...” giving Him some lame excuses when His initial instructions or commands are crystal clear, then we are entering the slipping slope, which God may just let us  slide down in order to discipline us so that we learn to trust and obey.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, when You instruct me to do something, or not to do something, let me obey immediately. Let me be careful not to yield to my flesh or the deceiving voice of the devil, and choose to go my way. Let Balaam’s example be a warning to me. Amen.
