Read : Genesis 32:22-30

“... I will not let you go unless you bless me.” - Genesis 32:26

Jacob heard the news that his brother Esau was coming to meet him with four hundred men. Jacob thought that it was the end of his life. He had no route to escape. He was desperate and lonely. He cried to God for help. There on the dark night at Jabbok, “A Man wrestled with him till day break,” (Genesis 32:24) and He was none other than the Lord. Without knowing that, Jacob kept on fighting. He said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” He was not only wrestling with God to get His blessing but also with himself - with his pride, deceit and self-reliance. It was then the Lord asked him, “What is your name?” Suddenly a painful realization struck him. “Jacob,” he answered. For the first time he saw himself as a deceiver, a pretender and a schemer! The wrestling went on throughout the night. Jacob was gripped with exhaustion. Yet he was determined to receive God’s blessing. He prevailed amazingly and he refused to quit! Ultimately the Lord blessed him, gave him a new name - Israel, and also manifold blessings.

Dear friends, like Jacob we too need such solitary encounter with the Lord, and during that time we need to empty ourselves and accept the stark reality of our sinful nature before His awesome presence.  We need to wrestle with God, take hold of His promises and refuse to let go until He blesses us.  Victory can only be achieved when we take hold of God in prayer.  So let us prevail till we are blessed.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, only when Jacob was alone at the bank of Jabbok did he face himself and deal with his own deceptive nature. It was only there he prevailed and got Your blessings. Let me also take time to be with You alone in order to be corrected and blessed by You. Amen
