In our spiritual lives we sometimes experience dryness. What are the causes for spiritual dryness? Firstly, when we sin against God and grieve the Holy Spirit, we are unable to feel the presence of God. God withdraws the light and joy of His presence. Ultimately, we lose His fellowship. Secondly, when we stretch ourselves beyond our limit, we become physically and mentally tired, totally exhausted and dried up. It is then that we feel there is nothing left in our spiritual reservoirs. “Unrelenting activity is a dangerous thing for any of us involved in Christian work. There is a great deal of output, but very little input. And so, we end up feeling dry and barren in spirit,” writes Victor Jack. Thirdly, when we are emotionally disturbed, it may lead to spiritual dryness. Problems in marriage, difficulties with the children at home, hassles at work, unresolved conflicts – all these rob our peace unconsciously. As a result, instead of looking upwards to get deliverance from the Lord, we become angry and frustrated.

Dear friends, the cure for spiritual dryness is to come to Jesus with nothing in our hands, but only a honest confession of sin on our lips. If we turn our hearts and our faces towards Him and invite the Holy Spirit to come inside us, He will certainly drench us with His love and fill us in an overflowing measure. (John 7:37) Our thirst will be quenched and our soul will be revived by Him and Him alone.

PRAYER:  Dear Lord, Holy Spirit, fill me afresh today. I am dried up, burnt out and exhausted. Quench my thirst and equip me for all that You have in store for me. Let every sin that blocks the flow be removed from me. Wash me, cleanse me and fill me in an overflowing measure.  Amen.
