“... Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.”
- II Corinthians 2:11
Satan uses many devices to attack God’s children. First, he chooses his own time of attack - the weaker moments in our lives. Satan tempted Jesus when He was fasting in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights. Satan considered this as the best time to tempt Jesus because of various reasons as follows:
Firstly, after Jesus was baptised with the Holy Spirit, He was led by the Spirit to the wilderness, where He was all alone. The devil considered this as the most apt time. We need to be cautious when we are alone. It is then, Satan puts unwanted thoughts in our minds.
Secondly, Jesus was hungry. “Deprivation increases drive,” says a proverb. “When our needs are not met for an extended period, the internal drive to fulfil the need mounts up, and we feel pressure increasing in us. This applies to hunger, thirst, sleep and other bodily needs and desires,” writes Charles Durham. Satan knew that it was the crucial time in Jesus’ ministry. If he somehow succeeded to defeat Him, then Jesus would once for all become a slave to him! (Matthew 4:7,8)
Next device Satan commonly uses is creating doubt on the promises of God and trying to prove that God is a liar. During the baptism of Jesus, the heavenly Father had proclaimed that Jesus was His beloved Son. (Matthew 3:17) But, in the wilderness, the devil tempted Jesus by trying to create a doubt, “If you are the Son of God ...” (Matthew 4:6) Let us be prudent. Even today, Satan creates doubt in our hearts regarding God and His promises.
Dear friends, let us not provide Satan an opportunity. We can do this only by depending on the Holy Spirit’s power and His strength. PRAYER: Lord, how daring Satan was in trying his devices on Lord Jesus Himself. He chose the right time when Jesus was hungry, lonely and emotionally high. He tried to even convince Jesus to worship him! Lord, I solely depend on You for fighting back Satan when he attacks me. Amen.
