Read : I Samuel 13: 1-15
"See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God." - Hebrews 3:12
Saul’s heart was controlled by unbelief, impatience, and deceitfulness. The Philistines assembled at Micmash with a vast army, which consisted of chariots and soldiers as numerous as the sand on the seashore. Seeing this critical situation, the three thousand men who were in Saul’s army were panic-stricken. Most of them fled and some hid in caves and other places. Finally, Saul had only six hundred men with him to fight against the Philistines! He was afraid and he did not want to go to the battle without first offering a sacrifice to the Lord. So he waited for Samuel who had already told Saul that he would come and meet him after seven days to offer the burnt offering. But when Samuel did not come till the seventh day, Saul became impatient and boldly offered the sacrifice knowing fully well that offering sacrifices to the Lord was to be done exclusively by the priests. Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived. (I Samuel 13:10) When Saul saw Samuel, he began to justify his action. He blamed Samuel and the soldiers saying that it was Samuel’s fault that he came late and it was the army’s fault that they deserted him. Thus we see Saul pointing his fingers on others and making excuses instead of confessing his sin.
Dear friends, Saul’s unbelief, impatience, arrogance and blaming others were judged by God. He talked through Samuel that his crown will eventually be taken from him and would be given to some other person. `Let us not give room to unbelief. Let us be patient and wait for God’s timings even if there is a delay. Let us be humble to admit our shortcomings before God and men. PRAYER: Almighty God, how tragic it is that Saul lost his power and kingdom within a short period because he displeased You by his arrogance and disobedience. Let me be warned by his example. Let me be careful. Let me not sin against You and bring down Your wrath upon myself. Amen.
