“Friend, I am not being unfair to you.  Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?” - Matthew 20: 13

In this parable the landowner clearly represents the Lord, and vineyard represents His Kingdom.  The landowner wanted to hire some men to work for him.  He went to the market place where he could find such labor.  In this parable we read that the landowner went several times to the market place, perhaps the day was spent and there was more work to be finished.  At the end of the day, the landowner first paid the workers who came last and who probably worked an hour or two. They received the pay for a full day’s work.  This led to the other workers think that they would get more, because they had been there all day.  But they were wrong, because they too received the same - the full day’s wages.  Quite understandably the workers who had been there all day complained to the landowner that  it was unfair.  The landowner in response said that the early workers received exactly what he had promised  them and what they had agreed to.  So they had no reason to complain. And since he was the landowner, he was free to offer the other workers what he thought was fair.

Dear friends, in God’s kingdom, He is absolutely sovereign and He can deal with His servants in whatever way He chooses.  He alone makes the decisions of what to give them for service and how to reward their faithfulness.  So we, the workers, should be pleased with what He gives us, and not concerned with what He gives others.  We should be ready to respond to the opportunity given to serve Him, and rejoice in the reward He gives.  Let us rest assured that when opportunity and reward come from the gracious Lord, they will surely be generous.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for giving me an opportunity to work in Your vineyard.  Let me be grateful that You have chosen me for Your service, and let me not compare myself with other workers or complain about the rewards they get.  You, being gracious, will always reward me generously.  Amen.
