Read : Proverbs 1:23-28
“A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed - without remedy.” Proverbs 29:1
We read at least a dozen times in Exodus 7-11 that Pharaoh hardened his heart and did not let the people go. In the first instance, Pharaoh saw how the God of Moses turned a rod into a snake. He then saw the water of the Nile becoming blood. Next, he witnessed how the whole country was plagued by frogs, (Exodus 8:6) when Aaron stretched his hand over the waters of Egypt, and then with gnats, when Aaron struck the dust of the ground. (8:16) Pharaoh’s heart became more and more unyielding. Next came the plague of flies by which the whole land of Egypt was polluted, whereas the land of Goshen in which the Israelites lived was not infested. Then came the plague on livestock. All the livestock of the Egyptians died whereas those of the Israelites were spared. Next, Pharaoh witnessed festering boils breaking out on all his country-men, which was followed by the plague of hail and plague of darkness and the plague of locusts. Finally, there came the warning from the Lord, through Moses and Aaron about the greatest plague in which all the firstborn of the Egyptians right from the son of Pharaoh to the son of the slave girl would die. Even then Pharaoh did not change his mind. As a result, he lost his firstborn son on that very night after Moses and Aaron left his presence.
Dear friends, in Leviticus 26:23,24 the Lord says, “If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction but continue to be hostile toward me, I myself will be hostile toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over.” So let us be careful not to take the Lord’s warning lightly.PRAYER: Dear Lord, even after seeing the great signs and miracles Pharaoh failed to submit to Your will. Let me not be hard-hearted and rebel against You when You discipline me, but let me have a yielding heart, accept my waywardness and return to You with humility. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
