Read : I Corinthians 3: 1-9
“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it+, but God made it grow.”
- I Corinthians 3: 6
Jill Briscoe said, “Corrie ten Boom told me this once and I will never forget it. She said, “Jill, people thank me so much, and it used to worry me because I did not want to get a proud heart. So I began to collect these compliments like flowers. “Thank you,” I would say. Then at the end of the day I would kneel down and I would pray, “Here you are Jesus, they are all Yours!” The context of today’s text is that the Apostle Paul planted the Church at Corinth first, and Apollos came after him to be their teacher and leader. So in the Church, there arose division and disunity. There were two groups of people - some said, “We like Paul better,” and others, “Well, we follow Apollos.” Paul rebuked the Corinthians in I Corinthians 3:5, “What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe.” Paul, with all humility, acknowledged that he and Apollos were mere servants, who planted and watered seeds of faith, but only God provided the increase. Paul gave his entire life to do God’s work. But he knew who was responsible for the success of that work. He wrote, “Neither he who plants, nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.”
Dear friends, there is a dangerous celebrity syndrome in Christendom today, where evangelists and leaders are elevated like super stars. This leads to strife, contention and divisions among the believers. Let us understand that the leaders are mere workers in God’s garden who direct people to the Gardener. Let us not exalt them above God, but give God all the glory due to Him.PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for the examples of Corrie ten Boom and the Apostle Paul, through which I am taught to serve and praise You, the Gardener, and not the workers in Your garden. You deserve all glory. Let me give all the honor solely to You, and not exalt any evangelist or leader. Amen.
