Read : Jeremiah 2: 1-13

“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, ... and have dug their own cisterns. ...” - Jeremiah 2: 13

The Lord spoke to Jeremiah and instructed him to tell the people of Israel how they used to love Him devotedly when they were following Him through the wilderness from Egypt to the Promised Land. Even though the Israelites were not completely faithful to the Lord in the wilderness, their commitment to Him then was much stronger than it was in Jeremiah’s days. Their problem then was mainly lack of faith (unbelief), whereas in Jeremiah’s day it was departure from Him (apostasy). Israel was set apart for the Lord. She was holy to the Lord. But now they had abandoned Him and went behind foreign gods.

The Lord had brought them into a fruitful land and had given them its produce and wealth, but they had defiled His land with their sins and made it an abomination with their adultery. They committed two evils - one, a sin of omission and the other a sin of commission. They had forsaken the Lord who like a fountain provided all their needs. And they had pursued idols who, like broken cisterns, could not even hold water - much less provide it. So God warned them that the consequences of their own wickedness and apostasies would come back on them and plague them. He said that this would teach them a lesson of what it was to abandon the Lord their God.

Dear friends, we have two choices before us - we may turn to or away from the Lord, or we may turn to and away from other allegiances. Let us make a wise decision - not to run behind the “gods of this world,” but follow the living God who is the source of life.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, how sad it is to read that the Israelites abandoned You, who are the source of living water and chose to follow useless  broken cisterns to save them!  Let me be careful not to bring down upon me Your  wrath, by my disobedience to Your Word and rebellion against You.  Amen.
