Read : Isaiah 61: 1-3, Luke 4: 16-21

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me, ... to preach the good news to the poor. ...” - Isaiah 61: 1

Jesus at the beginning of His ministry, quoted from this passage in Luke 4: 18-19. It was a prophetic declaration of His anointing and calling. What a great encouragement it gives us to know that He is a compassionate God who powerfully works in our lives even today! He shares good news with us when we are poor in spirit. He heals our broken hearts, liberates us from captivity and releases us from our bondages. He comforts and consoles us when we mourn, and He gives us beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. What is the purpose of all this? As He works in our lives during difficult times, filling us with healing, freedom, comfort, beauty, joy, praise, He makes us “oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord” for the glory of His name.

Oak trees are sturdy and strong, which live long, even more than 200 years. An oak tree is simply an acorn which is a small and unassuming seed that holds within it the potential for growth and prosperity. This acorn attaches to the ground and from this develops the great oak tree which is able to face intense heat and brutal cold, heavy rains and severe drought, fierce storms and strong winds, and through all this it perseveres and flourishes actually becoming stronger because of all the adversity!

Dear friends, in the midst of trying times, let us be encouraged thinking of this. The Lord not only knows all about our situations, He also is able to bring us out through these tough times and make us as strong as “an oak of righteousness,” - glorifying His name.
