Read : Psalm 51: 1-12

“ O Lord, ... examine my heart and my mind.” - Psalm 26:2 “

Create in me a pure heart, O God, ... ” - Psalm 51:10

The following words were written on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop in the Crypts of Westminster Abbey:

“When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered that the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country. But it too seemed immovable. As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me; but alas, I couldn’t. And now as I lie on my death bed, I suddenly realize – “If I had only changed myself first, then by example, I could have changed my family. From their inspiration and encouragement, I could then have been able to better my country, and who knows, I may have even changed the world.”

There is a song which goes like this - “Take a look at your life, the life you are living – You are the only Bible some people read.” We point out others’ mistakes and try to correct them and change them. But in fact, how many of such sins we ourselves commit in our own lives! We expect others to change their life while we ourselves need to be transformed in and out. In Matthew 7:3-5, Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of saw-dust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ... You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from our brother’s eye.” So dear friends, let us examine ourselves first and get rid of every sin and wickedness that is ruining our life.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, how often have I failed in my efforts to change others! I understand that unless I change myself and live as I preach, I will not be able to transform others.  Help me to correct myself, and give me grace to live a witnessing life to the glory of Your name.  Amen.
