“From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” - Matthew 4: 17

Repentance is change of one’s mind. It is turning to God from sin. Repentance and faith go side by side. It is impossible to have true faith in Jesus Christ apart from true repentance from sin, or have true repentance from sin apart from true faith. They are two sides of the same work of the Holy Spirit - to convict sinners of their sin and draw them to Christ. “Repentance involves recognizing that we have thought wrongly in the past and determining to think rightly in future,” writes one author. The repentant person has “second thoughts” about the mindset he formerly embraced. There is a change in his thinking - he has a new way of thinking about God, about sin, about holiness and about doing God’s will. True repentance leads to salvation. Note that repentance is not a work we do to earn salvation. No one can repent and come to God unless God draws him to Himself. (John 6: 44).

Dear friends, we are all born in sin, we naturally love sin. We take to sin just as the bird takes to flying and the fish takes to swimming. There never is a child that requires schooling or education in order to learn deceitfulness, selfishness, self-will, pride. These things spring up of themselves, and this is a proof of our fallen nature. Unless we repent and are saved we cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. Proverbs 28:13 says, “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” So let us recognize our dire condition, acknowledge that we are unable to save ourselves and turn to Jesus Christ as the Only One who can save us.
