When John E. Millais, the famous artist and painter exhibited his painting “Ophelia” in 1852, it gained much admiration from the general public and became a popular piece that it is still on display in Tate Britain, an art gallery in London. However one critic dubbed it “O Failure!” and it is said that Millais was plagued by these words for the rest of his life. Millais’ focus was solely on the negative statement of this critic that he failed to accept the compliments, thus becoming a pessimist! A Christian poster in a bookshop displayed the picture of a man with his arms folded and a look of resignation on his face. Printed on his T-shirt was written “I gave up!” In the corner of his T-shirt was a drawing of a little black hill and on it was a tiny cross. These words were imprinted beneath it - “I didn’t.” Almost every day we face discouraging circumstances, failures, loneliness, sorrow, doubts and frustration. How good and gratifying are we, when amidst these trying circumstances a friend comes alongside and says or does something that encourages our spirit! A Christian once told, “I can go on for a whole month on a single word of encouragement!” But it may not be possible to have such a good friend to lift our spirit up every time we feel discouraged. On the other hand, we have a loving God who pushes us forward even if we fail.

Dear friends, do not allow failures to ruin your lives.  The One who triumphed over all failures extends His hand to you.  Take hold of His hand and move onward.  Victory is certainly yours because you have placed your hands in the hands of the One who has triumphed!

PRAYER: Dear Lord, show me Your will and purpose in my life. Whenever I face failure let me not bury myself in self-pity and give up, but help me to seek Your counsel, rectify my mistake and go forward with Your strength and not in my own. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
