Thursday, July 17 || HOW TO LAY UP TREASURE IN HEAVEN!

Read : Luke 12: 32,33; 18:22-25

“... use the worldly wealth to gain friends ... so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” - Luke 16:9

Jesus suggested how to lay up treasures in heaven for us. In Luke 12:33 we read that Jesus asked His disciples to sell their possessions and give to the poor. We read of Jesus' conversation with the rich young ruler in Luke 18:22. The rich young ruler did not have the mind to accept what Jesus suggested to him and hence he lost eternal life, whereas the disciples gave themselves to be spent for the Lord. They had nothing for themselves and hence they received a great reward in heaven. What is the reward? In the resurrection we will receive back the investment. How? By giving freely the giver would gain many friends in this world, and when he enters heaven he would be received and welcomed by them into everlasting homes - that are being built for them in the heavenly abode. Paul also wrote in I Timothy 6:17-19 that people who are rich, who have lot of possessions here on this earth, should be ready to give and be willing to share. By doing so, they will lay up treasures for themselves as a firm foundation and they will take hold of eternal life.

Dear friends, then what prevents us in using the money the Lord has placed in our hands for the benefit of the poor and needy? What prevents us to spend from our savings of the earnings for the betterment of the poor? Let us open our hearts and our hands wide and give to those who are in need without any reservation. Thereby we can surely lay up treasures in heaven.

PRAYER: Almighty God, let me not be like that rich young man who trusted in his wealth and failed to even realize that it would not take him to heaven. Let me not put my trust on earthly things which are temporary, but trust You who alone is the eternal refuge. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
