“I want you to know how much I am struggling for you. ...”
- Colossians 2: 1
This verse gives us the tremendous importance of praying for one another. Paul agonized, he struggled hard in prayer for the Colossian Christians over and over again even though he had not personally met them. Why was Paul struggling? He knew that false doctrines were already beginning to permeate the church, and so prayed to present every one of the believers as complete in Christ. His struggle was not an easy one. He knew that they were in danger and that he could not be in the midst of them. At the time Paul wrote these words, he could not move beyond the walls of the “rented house,” (Acts 28: 30) being continuously held by the chain linking him to a Roman soldier. But even under these circumstances he could engage in spiritual warfare through the power of prayer. Eadie writes, “Like the caged bird beating its bleeding breast against the wires of the prison, as it hears the repeated cry of its unseen young ones, the apostle turned towards those in church. He strained his eager spirit to the utmost as he sighed over the possible desolation which might come upon them.”
Dear friends, agonizing is the picture of an athlete exerting every ounce of the energy he has in the struggle of the contest. The idea is that Paul labored, toiled and wrestled in prayer for the Colossian believers. Are we exerting our spiritual muscles in prayer like the athletes exert themselves in the Olympic Games? Do we pray for the salvation of those whom the Holy Spirit has burdened us in the way Paul prayed? If not, let us be inspired by Paul. When we agonize in prayer for the lost souls, surely we will see their salvation sooner or later. PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am greatly inspired by Paul to pray hard and agonize for the salvation of the souls. Prayer is the greatest power you have given to me through which I lead the perishing souls to Calvary. Let me strain all my spiritual muscles and prevail in prayer till I see the result. Amen.
