“The eye is the lamp of the body. ... ” - Matthew 6: 22
The eye is the index of a person’s character. The way we use our eyes will determine the kind of people we are and what we become. The age in which we live is dominated by the television. Masses are glued to the TV. Modern technology has enabled us to see the good as well as the bad like never before in the history of the world. So what our Lord Jesus said about the eye being the lamp of the body is extremely relevant in our time. It forces us to ask a couple of questions like, “What do we allow ourselves to watch?” and “What do we want to watch?”
Dear friends let us answer these questions sincerely. Jesus said, “If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body is full of darkness.” When we use our eyes to see obscene things, it is not just the eyes that are polluted; the whole body actually becomes corrupted. Jesus further explained in Matthew 5: 28, 29 – “Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his HEART. If your right eye causes you to sin, gorge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” So let us be careful about what we see. Job said, “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” (Job 31: 1) David’s desire was to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord all the days of his life. Shall we also make such a commitment?
PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me Your grace to turn my eyes away from the sinful things of this world. I make a covenant with my eyes not to see filthy and lustful things, but to gaze upon Your beauty all the days of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
