Thursday, February 06 || ELIGIBILITY TO ENTER GOD’S KINGDOM

Read : Matthew 18: 1-4

“... Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” - Matthew 18: 3

This incident occurred after the Transfiguration and after Jesus’ second prediction of His death. When Peter, James and John were asked by Jesus to come along with Him to the Mount of Transfiguration and after they had seen Moses and Elijah there, they became inflated and infatuated with themselves. Evidently they felt they deserved some special status of greatness because they were eyewitnesses to an amazing event. They approached Jesus along with the other disciples and asked Him, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” To their question, Jesus did not just answer with words, but He made His teaching more impressive by an act. He called a little child to Him and placed him in their midst. And He said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3)

Dear friends, “to become like children” means having humility of heart and mind exhibiting a trusting spirit like a child. Children entirely depend on their parents for provisions, care and guidance. Imagine a child sitting at the dinner table. It does not worry about where the food comes from, how it was prepared or if there will be enough. The child simply trusts that the parent will provide. This is the kind of trust and reliance Jesus asks for - a faith free from anxiety and full of confidence in God’s care. Let us search our hearts and see if we have such childlike qualities. Let us cast away ego, self centeredness, and desire to become like children.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, take away pride and self-centeredness from my heart.  Grant me to become as a little child  in Your Kingdom.  Let my heart be filled with Your love,  let me like a child exhibit simplicity, humility and profound trustfulness in You.  Amen.
