“Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain and, it did not rain on the land ...’ - James 5:17

During Ahab’s period, Elijah challenged that there would be no rain for the next three years just to prove that the Lord Jehovah is the true God, who sends rain and blesses the harvest. According to his word, the Lord shut the heavens and there was a severe drought throughout the land. At the end of three years, Elijah once again appeared before Ahab and told him to gather together 450 prophets of Baal. He then challenged them that the God who would send fire from heaven and consume the sacrifice laid on the altar would be the true God. How confident and courageous he was “with a volcano for a heart and a thunderstorm for a voice!” Elijah’s purpose was not only to expose the false god Baal, but also to bring the compromising people back to the Lord. So, first the prophets of Baal shouted and danced calling Baal to send fire. Nothing happened till noon. At the time of evening sacrifice, Elijah repaired the altar of the Lord, sanctified it, dug a trench around it, filled it with water and put the cut pieces of the bull on the wood drenching everything with water. Then he lifted his voice to God and prayed a prayer of few words but full of power. Suddenly fire fell from heaven and devoured everything. The Israelites fell on their faces crying, “The Lord, He is God.” Elijah then prayed fervently and the Lord once again revealed Himself by sending rain from heaven.

Dear friends, Leonard Ravenhill writes, “The man who can get believers to praying would, under God, usher in the greatest revival that the world has ever known.”  God is not at fault.  He is able.  But the problem is with us.  
Let us pray like Elijah.  
Let us be zealous for God.  
Let us reveal to the dark world that Jehovah is the true and living God.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, Your name is defiled. Your Law is broken, Your Book is forgotten. Idolatry is spreading even in the minds of Christians. How come all these do not stir us to tearful intercession and godly jealousy? Forgive us and turn us to be prayer warriors! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
