Read : Acts 6:1-4
“... Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.” (Luke 6:12)
“There is a lot of work to be done, business meetings to be attended, files to be negotiated. There is no time to pray and to read the Bible.” Such excuses are given by almost every Christian of this age. E.M.Bounds writes, “Short devotions deplete spiritual vigor, arrest spiritual progress, sap spiritual foundations, blight the root of spiritual life.” Some might argue that there were men in the Biblical times who prayed one word, one sentence prayers. Yes. The truth is they uttered short prayers in public but they spent long hours in prayers in their closets. The prayers of Moses recorded in the Bible may be short, but he spent forty days and nights on Mount Sinai along with the Lord, during which time he was communing with the Lord, through fasting and praying! Similarly, the prayer of Elijah may be condensed into a paragraph, but doubtlessly Elijah spent many hours with the Lord in prayer before he challenged the people that he would bring down fire from the Lord. (I Kings 18:36-38) Paul’s prayers were short, but I Thessalonians 3:10 tells of his private prayers which were all through nights and days! Our Lord Jesus often withdrew from men into solitude and prayed for many hours, sometimes even throughout the nights.
Dear friends, let us overcome every barrier that hinders us from praying. “To be little with God is to be little for God. We live shabbily because we pray meanly. Plenty of time to feast in our closets will bring marrow and fatness in our lives,” writes E.M. Bounds. Let us know the power of prayer. Sincere prayer truly brings great results. So let us get up early from our beds and spend the best hours of the day in prayer. Let us hold with iron grasp these best hours for God and prayer. Amen. PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am ashamed to confess that I reduce my prayer time to a few minutes and extend my business hours more and more. Forgive me. Give me the passion for praying and help me to enjoy Your Presence whenever I pray. Let my stay in my prayer closet be lengthened and intensified. Amen.
